Chapter 21

Detective Baker walked back into the office, poured a cup of the thick black liquid that passed for coffee, and settled back behind his desk as he turned on his computer. He let the coffee cool for a few minutes before taking a sip. He grimaced at the taste as he had countless times in the past, then set the cup down and frowned slightly at the dark ring near the top of the cup where the coffee had been.

His office looked like a hurricane had swept through recently. The bookshelves bulged with various law enforcement books threatening to topple to the floor, the pages Baker deemed important marked by yellow stickers. Files and newspapers lay on the cabinets that occupied the corner of the room, and his desk was littered in paper. Yet Baker’s colleagues knew he could immediately place his hands on anything that he needed to. He was just about to check his emails when a tap sounded on the door.

Finch stood leaning against the door frame with his arms crossed and a file dangling from one hand. With a wave, Baker summoned him into the office, and his protégé plunked himself down in the chair on the opposite side of the desk to Baker. Finch slouched with his legs straight out and his feet crossed at the ankle. His lips wound into a smug smile. As usual, he was casually attired in designer jeans and a white golf shirt that emphasized his permanent tan. The file he had been carrying now rested on his lap and he peered at Baker around steepled fingers without saying a word.

Baker finally spoke first. “Did you find a woman that would actually spend some time with you last night or what?

“There were so many to choose from, I decided it was best to disappoint them all. No, I was just wondering if you really thought we’d get anything back on the girl in the ditch from the information we had. Talk about a long shot.”

Baker frowned at Finch’s demeanor and shook his head. “No, I know it was a long shot. It was worth a try, though. Hernandes thinks she might have been born in Africa. The possible disease Mike mentioned – sickle cell – should help us identify her, eventually. Maybe she was born here in this country, but it’s possible her family moved here from somewhere else at some point. Maybe the results from the DNA test will tell us something and we’ll put a notice about her on the news to see if anyone comes forward. I probably could have used that reporter for that if I hadn’t sprayed him with gravel. Maybe you should talk to him.”

Finch’s face broke into a wide smile. “We may not have to do all that. As you know, I ran the information through the National Crime Information Center when we were still at the scene, but nothing came back. However, when I entered the additional information from the autopsy, we did get some matches.
